(My Maternal Great Grandfather)
Born: 1 September 1897 in Lapua, Finland
Died: 22 February 1972 in Grayland, Washington, USA
Johan William Jaattela was born in Lapua, Finland on 1 September 1897. His father's name was John M. Jaattela (1871-1907) and his mother's name was Sanna-Liisa Marttila (1877-1940).
When he was born, he joined his brother, Matais Eemil Jaattela who was born July 1896 in Lapua, Finland, also. This would make the brothers only 14 months apart. On 28 June 1899, their sister, Lempi Maria Jaattela joined the family. She was born in Helskinki, Lansi-Suomen Laani, Finland.

In the 1900 Census, it indicates that John M. Jaattela (John William's father) emigrated to the United States in 1891 (9 years prior to the census) and that Sanna-Liisa (John William's mother) emigrated in 1893 (7 years prior to the census).
The Jaattela family can be found living in Stuntz, St. Louis, Minnesota, USA in the 1900 Census. The census was taken on June 9, 1900. This would make John William only 2 years old. His brother, Matais would have been 3. It indicates that there are only 4 people living in the home. Father, John, mother Sanna, Matais and John William. Where is Lempi? It also indicates that Sanna has had 3 children and 3 are living, so Lempi is still alive and only a year old.
In 1902, the entire family is listed as departing from New York, New York and traveling to Liverpool, England. Sanna is listed as a "servant."

On 29 May 1907, John Williams, father, John M. Jaattela died in Fairview, Nevada. He was only 35 years old. He was a miner and after doing some research, I believe that he may have been working at a mining camp in Fairview, NV.
Fairview, Nevada
Discovery of silver in the area in 1905 led to several claims and the creation of a boom town in 1906. The community took it's name from Fairview Peak. Fairview changed locations twice; once to move closer to the mines and mills in which the town's residents worked, and once because the town outgrew the narrow canyon in which the second town was sited.
From 1906 to 1907, the mining camp's population expanded dramatically. Fairview had multiple hotels, banks, assay offices, 27 saloons, a newspaper, post office union h all and a population of 2000. After 1908, outside interest in the mining camps and town declined, and the newspaper closed. The town stayed prosperous until 1912, and afterwards was abandoned.
Fairview is currently a ghost town. One of the few remnants of the old town is the bank vault from the first town site's bank; the vault can be seen from the nearby Austin-Lincoln highway.
I found this record for Juho Jaattela who traveled on the SS Mauritetania and landed in New York, New York on May 13, 1913. It says he was born in the United States and is traveling to Hibbing, Minnesota. It lists his age as 15. It also says that the last permanent place he lived was in Lapua, Finland. It lists his father as Juho Pakkala, which according to my records, makes sense. Several of Juho Sr.'s brothers and sisters include "Pajala" with their surname of Jaattela. Could this be the same?

I can't find Sanna-Liisa on the 1910, 1920, 1930, or 1940 United States Census. Sanna-Liisa died in Hibbing, Minnesota on 6 January 1940, so at some point she returns to the United States. Where did they go? Where is John and everyone in the 1920 census? still in finland?Did they not return from Finland? I need to research because she dies in hibbing minnesota

On February 14, 1916 Juho Ibiljami Jaattela immigrated to the United States. His port of departure was Stavanger, Norway and the name of the ship was SS Bergensfjord. I am POSITIVE this record from Ellis Island matches the information on John Jaattela's petition for naturalization records.
This would also indicate that he stayed in Finland when he and his mom and siblings went back in 1902. I can't imagine they could continue going back and forth. I suppose this is how he met my great grandmother, Sigrid Lappi. need to research how the met.

September 12, 1918 - This next part gets confusing to me. I found two World War 1 registration cards for John. The details are almost identical. However, they are filed in two separate states and dated the same day. One lists his wife, Sigrid, as his closest relative living in Washington. The other lists his mother, Sanna Jaattela, living in Finland

On 28 April 1919, John William Jaattela submitted naturalization papers in Washington State. He lists his age as 21 and his occupation as a coal miner. He states on the record that he was born in Lapua, Finland on 1 September 1897. He emigrated from Norway and landed in New York, New York on 14 February 1916.

In the 1920 Census, John William Jaattela, his wife Sigrid, and their daughter Thelma are living in Carbonado, Washington. John is listed as being 22, Sigrid is listed as being 21, and Thelma is 1 year and 7 months. It indicates that both John and Sigrid emigrated to America in 1916. But, strangely, it lists John as being born in Finland, when in fact, he was born in Hibbing, Minnesota. His occupation is listed as "miner."

In 1930, John, Sigrid, and Thelma are living in Grayland, Grays Harbor, Washington. John is listed as 32, Sigrid 31, and Thelma is 11. They are living on Cranberry Road and is his occupation is listed as "farmer." Oddly, John is listed this time as being born in Minnesota. I believe that this is accurate.

In the 1940 Census, John (42), Sigrid (41) and Thelma (21) are listed as living in Grayland, Washington still. John's occupation is still "farmer." On this census, it states that the highest grade he completed was 3rd grade. Take a closer look at this census. Thelma's future husband, my granfather, William Huovila was their next door neighbor!
